Craving Keto Friendly Sushi? Try a Poke Bowl Instead!

Craving Keto Friendly Sushi?

If you’re having a serious craving for keto-friendly sushi, good luck with that at local all-you-can-eat sushi in Reno. You’re going to be stuck with a lot of rice. You can either waste it and try to hide it (a big no-no at Reno sushi restaurants), or you can eat it and fall out of Ketosis. So, if you’re looking for a keto friendly, sushi alternative, try a poke bowl instead!

Pola Poke Bowls on the corner of Plumb Lane & McCarran Blvd serves up many delicious keto friendly options. And I know as someone who’s frequently on a ketosis-based diet plan, it’s important to be able to keep those carbs and sugars to a minimum. So, the next time you’re in the mood for keto-friendly sushi, skip the rice-laden dish that will throw you out of ketosis. Sub it for a delicious keto-friendly poke bowl where you have the option to add or remove any ingredients you need.

In this article, we will learn about the Keto Diet, and who might benefit from it. We will also why your typical sushi is a no-go for those who follow this diet. Then we’ll show you why poke bowls are a great alternative the next time you’re in the mood for all those wonderful umami flavors that come in your favorite sushi roll, long roll, hand roll, or nigiri.

What is the Keto Diet?

Keto diets have been catching in certain diet and fitness circles, so what is it anyway? Those that are enthusiastic about this way of eating promote this diet by claiming that it can be a fast way to lose weight while feeling increased energy. Interestingly, this diet has also been shown to help with symptom management for children with epilepsy, although experts are still unsure as to why this could be.

The keto diet plan is very strict and involves the elimination of carbohydrates including most fruit, with the exception of berries. Sugary condiments and starchy vegetables such as potatoes and corn are also eliminated. The diet is primarily comprised of fats, proteins, and low-starch vegetables such as leafy greens and avocados. This is why sushi is usually not an option for people on a keto diet. Much of a sushi roll is comprised of rice. With Poke bowls, you are able to put together a combination of fish and vegetables that are completely keto friendly, while enjoying some of your favorite flavors that are prevalent in a lot of sushi rolls.

The Keto Diet Has Been Keto Friendly to Me, But Not Everyone Is The Same

As I stated above, I actually follow a high-protein diet and try to limit my carbs and sugars as much as possible. I especially make sure that if I do have carbs, they are naturally present, such as carbs in cream, cheese, nuts, etc. I’ve found that avoiding carbs is best for me not only because they pack on weight, but because I have binge eating disorder and carbs like rice and pasta are a huge trigger food form me.

Additionally, as long as I get all my proteins, my cravings for these trigger foods seem to decrease significantly. And the less frequently I have them, the better my entire life is. In other words, I feel that being on a keto friendly diet is vital to my physical and mental health. From my personal experience, it’s the best way for me to stay on track, stay healthy, and stay functional.

Keto seems to be the most helpful for people who need to lose significant amounts of weight for health reasons. The diet was originally created by Dr. Gianfranco Capello, an associate professor of surgery at the Sapienza University in Rome, Italy. In Dr. Capello’s study over 19,000 dieters experienced significant weight loss in a short span of time, had few side effects and most were able to maintain this weight loss after a year’s time. In order for the program to work, one must carefully adhere to this diet.

Is the Keto Diet Healthy For Everyone?

At the same time, there are critics of this diet that claim that this is unhealthy, and can even be dangerous to one’s health. So what’s the truth? Is keto healthy? Let’s start by looking at the term “ketosis” to understand one of the main arguments proponents of this diet make when discussing the virtues of keto.

Ketosis is a process that occurs when people eat a diet that is very low in carbohydrates, it causes ketones to build up in the bloodstream. Low carbohydrate levels will cause the blood sugar levels to drop as well, causing the body to begin breaking down fat stores to use for energy. This is why keto fanatics claim it is such an effective strategy for weight loss.

What is less talked about is that ketosis is really a mild form of ketoacidosis. Ketoacidosis is something that mostly affects people with type 1 diabetes. It is even the leading cause of death of people with diabetes who are under the age of 24. Another danger of keto diets is that they can cause muscle loss, or at the very least make it very difficult to gain muscle, since muscles rely on glycogen, which comes from carbohydrates. According to Francine Blinten, RD, a certified clinical nutritionist, and public health consultant, “Keto diets should only be used under clinical supervision and only for brief periods.”

Building a Keto Friendly Poke Bowl at Pola Poke

At Pola Poke Bowls you can build your own poke bowl to your exact specifications. For example, you can ditch the rice. I do 99% of the time. Start your bowl with a nice base of mixed greens or iron-rich kale. My big tip here is to eat your poke bowl within 12 hours if you don’t have rice in there. After all, rice is great for absorbing all the flavors that collect at the bottom. This is usually no problem for me. However, I figured you should know so you can enjoy the freshest poke bowl possible.

At Pola Poke, there is an abundance of healthy keto-friendly proteins available including deep-sea crab, chicken, octopus, salmon, spicy tuna, tuna, and shrimp. You can combine one or more of these proteins according to your preference. We also offer many keto-friendly sauces. My personal preference changes constantly. However, if you’re looking to keep calories on the lower end, I suggest going with spicy tuna as a protein because the consistency and flavor perfectly combine with the other ingredients and makes for a hell of a bowl.

Add in some mineral-rich a flavorful veggies such as cucumber, fresh jalapeno, red bell peppers, scallions, seaweed and don’t forget the avocado! Top with some sesame seeds, macadamia nuts, and dried seaweed flakes for a little extra crunch. While condiments are discouraged in the Keto diet, that’s usually only because they are unhealthy. Jalapeno peppers, soy sauce, avocado, and fish all blend together beautifully, packing a big punch full of those spicy, salty, and umami flavors that we associate with a great sushi roll. Even if you aren’t on a keto diet, a meal rich in fish and veggies will leave you feeling nourished but energized, ready to take on anything your day throws at you.
